Spaying & Neutering

We strongly recommend spaying and neutering all pets not intended for breeding for several reasons.

  • It prevents unwanted pregnancies, and therefore, decreases crowding at shelters
  • It prevents or reduces the occurrence of mammary gland and testicular cancers
  • It prevents several unwanted diseases including pyometra, a life-threatening uterine infection.
  • It can reduce or prevent dogs from wandering.

Female dogs and cats are spayed starting at 5-6 months old.

Male cats are neutered at 5-6 months old. Male dogs can be neutered as early as 5-6 months old, but for large breed dogs, we recommend waiting until 12 months of age and even 18 months for some giant breeds.
